I recently had the pleasure to appear on an episode of the Center Stage Podcast, which is associated with the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI is an organization focused on supporting professionals and changemakers in career advancement, organizational success, and leadership. My conversation was with PMI Chief Customer Officer and Center Stage’s host, Joseph Cahill. I was honored to have the opportunity to speak about charting my career path and the drivers that led me into healthcare. I am proud of my 25+ year tenure in the healthcare industry, particularly the opportunity to positively impact people’s lives through my role at AssureCare.

• Identify your passion. I chose healthcare as I think it is a genuinely rewarding career that is THE industry that makes a difference in people’s lives. I truly believe to be successful in this industry, you need to have a passion for healthcare and helping people.
• Importance of lifelong learning. To be a strong student in healthcare [or any other industry you are passionate about], you must understand healthcare as a discipline, but you must also continue to find opportunities to educate yourself. I pursued a masters in health administration and then a doctorate in public heath, however I am not stopping there. With the advent of technology and automation, it is more important than ever to continue to learn and grow in this ever-evolving industry.
• Communication is vital. From a routine project to tackling the Covid pandemic, communication is key. One-third of all projects in the world fail due to poor communication. Successful projects occur when people are united through facts and clear communication.
• What Makes a Successful Career: Attitude, Preparedness, Effort, and Fun. If I had to choose four words to summarize a successful career these would be it. These are very much in your direct control, and if approached correctly, can point you in the path of a successful and rewarding career.
